SPECIFICATION OF AUSTIN HEALEY 300 MK. III
KOM525E (By previous owner / restorer)

This car was built between 2nd and 12th June 1967 and dispatched to Philadelphia a week later.  It returned to the UK worn out about 1990 and little happened to it until I bought it in February 1998.  Over the last three years it has been completely rebuilt to concours standard throughout.  It also has the benefit of being fitted with the performance modifications as used on the “Works” rally cars but with standard (comfortable) trim.

The following items are as originally built:

  • Car/chassis number                  H-BJ8-L/41756
  • Engine number                          29K-RU-H/16348
  • Body number                            86644
  • Batch number                           3236
  • Colour                                      Healey Blue (metallic)
  • Interior                                     Dark blue leather and Ambla
  • Hood                                        Dark blue Everflex
  • Gearbox                                   16233
  • Heater                                      Fitted
  • Steering column                        Adjustable
  • Windscreen                               Laminated
  • Brakes                                      Power assisted

The following list details improvements are reported to have been made during the e rebuild between 1998 and 2001 by a previous owner:-

Chassis shot blasted, repainted and rust proofed and injected with Dinitrol.
Suspension uprated with heavy duty shock absorbers and thicker anti-roll bar.
Fitted with wider 72 spoke chromed wheels and 185/70 V 15 SXWX Michelin tyres.
High ratio (3.5:1) rear axle for relaxed cruising (30mph per 1000 rpm), naturally the speedo is calibrated to suit. High ration (28%) overdrive operating on second, third and top and controlled with Abingdon style switch in aluminium gear knob . Modern solid state Facet fuel pump. Triple 2” SU carbs with Cooper filters.

Aluminium head and manifolds from Abingdon Works car TON 792 used for 1958 Alpine Rally (Nancy Mitchell/G. Wilton-Clarke) and 1958 Liege-Rome-Liege (Nancy Mitchell/Anne Hall) achieving second place for ladies on both events.  TON 792 (unlike some of its 1958 sisters) was not converted to 3000 spec for the following year and was “pensioned off” off after only two main events.  The valve seats were re-cut and checked for hardness.  They are believed to be suitable for unleaded fuel

The engine was lightened, balanced, line bored and blueprinted.  All key parts (along with suspension/steering components) were crack detected.  New lower compression pistons (in deference to the very high compression head and lower quality petrol now available) were fitted.  C.R. was reported about 9.5:1.  Vernier adjustable timing gear fitted and timing set to +/- half a degree.  Compression test figures ranged from 140 to 150 psi and are still rising as new pistons bed in.  High performance oil pump working through remote spin-off filter and oil cooler.  20 psi tickover and 55 psi on the run are to original spec.  Banana exhaust and high performance silencers in stainless steel.

Heavy duty radiator fitted and chrome wire wheels

The car comes complete with a full supplementary tool kit (including the very rare correct jack), handbook, tonneau and rail, hood envelope and all correct holding bags.

Various nice individual touches are incorporated such as locking fuel cap with key held on magnet behind the glove box, all other locks off the same key, battery fitted with fume vent to stop corrosion in the boot, throttle linkage and bonnet pull made in stainless steel, drivers mirror on special stainless mount (to original design) but tall enough to see over the hood, unlike the original fitting, spare wheel cover and bungee strap for safe stowing of tonneau etc. exhaust specially cranked to avoid soot on rear bumper, a lot of extra cockpit insulation to (slightly!) reduce the traditional problem of Healey interiors getting too hot, car wired negative earth to reduce corrosion and allow potential fitting of modern radio equipment (naturally with electronic rev counter rewired to suit). " unquote - please note we repeat thus description in goo dfaith but are unable to verify and therefore cannot confirm or guarantee as accurate.

The previous owner has had the car serviced by Rawles Motorsport Ltd and we have fitted a split union steering column as a safety upgrade
